Five Major European Football Leagues

1.      Serie A: This is the top league in Italy. Here the teams play with a very defensive approach to the game. Defenders in this league are some of the best in Europe, and their excellent defending technique makes this league very difficult to score in for the strikers. The defensive approach to the game is also called “Catenaccio”. Top football clubs in serie a include Juventus, Internazionale, AC Milan, AS Roma, and Napoli. Juventus are the current champions, and have also won the league the most number of times (35 times).

2.      Bundesliga: It is the top league in Germany. The teams in Bundesliga play with lot of pace, physical, and tactics. As similar to their country Germany, teams in Bundesliga make an engineering ground of the football field. Techniques and tactics used by players in the Bundesliga are recognised as “Total Football” in Europe. Top football clubs in Bundesliga are Bayern München (called as Bayern Munich in English), Borussia Dortmund, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Werder Bremen. Bayern Munich are the current champions, and have also won the league the most number of times (28 times).

3.      English Premier League: This is the top league of England. It is known as the most competitive league in the whole of Europe. Teams in the EPL play with lot of pace and skills. The “Gegenpressing” style of football is used mostly in the EPL, which means taking the ball as soon as the team loses possession. This league is stated to be the best league for young players who want to grow their skills and talent, as they get lot of competition in the league and an extremely good exposure for improving their skills. Top clubs in EPL include Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspurs, and Liverpool. The EPL is the most watched league in the whole world, and clubs there enjoy a very big global fan base. Manchester City are the current champions, and Manchester United have won the league the most number of times (13 times).

4.      La Liga: This is the premier football league of Spain. It is the widely considered as the best league in the whole of Europe. Here the teams give a lot of emphasis on skills, technique, and style of playing. Being the oldest league in the history of Europe, teams here have their own unique style of play, and their own unique school of thought which they carry on in their gameplay, for example, Barcelona’s tiki taka, and Atletico Madrid’s hard defence and pure counter attacking style of play. The la Liga is majorly dominated by three teams, which are FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid, it is almost impossible for any club to win the league in front of these 3 teams. The club of Barcelona and Real Madrid are the most followed clubs in the world of football, and the rivalry is so intense that a match between these two teams is referred to as “El Classico”. The teams in la Liga have a major dominance in Europe, and have the most number of wins for UEFA Champions League, and the FIFA Ballon D’or. The current winners are Barcelona and Real Madrid have won the league the most number of times (33 times).

5.      Ligue 1: It is the top football league in the country of France. This league combines the style of play of serie A, Bundesliga, and EPL. The teams here play with pace, physical, technique, and good defence. However, the league is often referred to as the “Farmer’s League”, due to lack of competition in the league in recent times, and the due to domination of only one club, i.e., PSG, in the league. On comparing it with the other 4 leagues in terms of champions league victory’s, this league is ranked at the bottom, as only the club Olympique de Marseille won it in the year 1993. Top clubs in Ligue 1 are Paris Saint Germain (PSG), Olympique de Marseille, Olympique Lyonnais, and Saint-Etienne. PSG are the current champions, and Saint-Etienne have won the league the most number of times (10 times).
