European Super League: End of Football?

Hey guys, it’s been a while, we all are through many things. The champions league round of 16 has ended and even the quarter finals have been finished with, however, I will discuss the same in another post.

Yesterday was a historic day in the history of football, as 12 European clubs announced the formation of a new European Super League, fans all around the world have been unhappy with their clubs and have been constantly demanding for abolishment of such league.

Let’s discuss what is the super league all about and why has it got football fans enraged around the world. The European Super League has currently 12 founding members which are Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool FC, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspurs, Internazionale, AC Milan, and Juventus. During this pandemic, the owners of these football clubs realized that football’s economic model was fragile and fans loved watching big clubs playing against each other, hence, decided to form another league similar to the American Major League Soccer, in which 15 teams are going to be permanent members and 5 are going to be guests every season. The 20 teams then would be divided into two groups of 10 each and will play with each team in the group, and the top three teams in each group directly qualify to the qualifiers and the team in the fourth place qualifies for the play offs. To induce the clubs to join the Super League, a joining amount will also be given to the founding members, and it has been projected that the European Super League will generate more revenue for the clubs than the domestic leagues and the Champions League, as big clubs will be facing each other every week attracting majority viewership around the world.

However, what has got everyone upset with the super league is the format that it holds. A format that is closed and completed, i.e., the 15 founding teams cannot be relegated, which indirectly kills the competition, as every good player will join these founding clubs and the small clubs will never get any chance to play against the elite clubs. The miracle we all saw in 2004 Champions League when Porto won the Champions League against all odds, and the dream run of Leicester City when the won the Premier League in 2016, surprising everyone will not be repeated anymore. The European Super League will have only the big teams winning disregarding every other club. Questions have also been asked on what basis have the founding clubs been decided, in the premier league the traditional big six have been taken as the founding members, but are the traditional big six worthy is still a question, for example, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspurs are not even in the top 6 in the premier league table and clubs like Leicester City and West Ham United who are above Liverpool, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspurs haven’t been considered for the super league.

As of today, only Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and Paris Saint Germain are the clubs who have rejected the idea of the European Super League, and are receiving much praise and recognition from fans all around the world. Further, to stop the formation of the super league, UEFA and Domestic League boards have imposed much sanctions on the clubs joining the European Super League, for example, the clubs joining the super league won’t be allowed to play in their domestic leagues or the domestic cups from next season, and will also not be allowed to play the Champions League or the Europa League. Further, players who sign up for the European Super League, will not be allowed to play for their National Teams and any international competitions.

That was my viewpoints on the European Super League, if it gets formed, will be a sad moment for every football fan around the world, because it kills the very spirit of the beautiful sport. Do let me know what you all think of this European Super League.

Thank You.
